Nik Takes Apart the Bathroom

It's amazing how quickly you can take a bathroom apart. Nik isn't wasting any time: on his first day off work since we got the keys, he had all his tools at the house and was removing the salmon pink backsplash from the bathroom.

Next to go were the weird 60's mirrored cabinets, and the formica counter. Nik discovered some crazy-bad wiring -- which somehow hadn't ever managed to burn the house down.

When we got the cabinet out, we discovered that the pink-and-maroon tile is in perfect condition! I'm not sure if I'm delighted or disappointed.

The vanity, the shower doors, and cabinets are now all out in the garage -- here is the result of a good day's work:

I spent the rest of the day looking up design ideas for pink-and-burgundy retro bathrooms. (Sigh. The tiles are in great shape, and we need to save our money for the kitchen. Nik assures me we can retile the floor someday...) I found this great article in RetroRenovation -- which is a total godsend, by the way, for ideas on how to properly appreciate a mid-century house -- on how to decorate a pink-and-maroon bathroom.

Today's bathroom design tip: start with a shower curtain, and use that to find paint & towel colors. So I've just ordered over $400 worth of shower curtains from Overstock.com. (It is shocking how many shower curtains there are. I mean - really? How many kinds of shower curtains does the world need?) I ordered nine, knowing I'll return most of them - here's hoping at least one of them works with our particular flavor of pink-and-burgundy!
