After a few evenings and all day today, the kitchen is almost completely demolished.

Earlier this week: Another evening, another section of tile removed...

Finishing tile removal today...

I gave Nik the go-ahead to remove the backsplash...

And then it was time to remove the sink and cabinets. Whoever installed these cabinets back in 1948 used a LOT of nails. Ripping the cabinets out was a huge effort and involved crowbars and splintering wood. But I really wanted to save the cute little peninsula if at all possible. Nik was a super good sport about it - and after many tries was able to literally cut it out from underneath using a Sawsall. No easy feat.

Success!

And then, there was the floor. Ugly new gray vinyl tile, over uglier yellow linoleum, over 1/4" plywood subfloor (thank God). Nik decided it all needed to go - taking it out and starting from scratch turns out to be the least complicated road to a new floor (go figure).
Remember what I said about how they used a lot of nails?

Nik decided to rip out the lath too, to make it easier to put in tile backsplash. And thus - our new kitchen, also now down to the studs:
